The Study Program for Bishop Barron's
The Mass is the best way to immerse yourself fully into the beauty and mystery of the principle act of Catholic worship and faith. Whether you use it
for personal formation or host a complete Study Program for a group, you’ll experience so much more by using the Study Guide, written by Elizabeth Scalia, a popular author, editor, and speaker, under the direction of Bishop Barron. Ms. Scalia is also a Benedictine oblate and managing editor of the Catholic Portal at Patheos.com, where she blogs as The Anchoress.
For group study, you will meet during seven 90-mintue sessions (one Orientation and six video talks and discussions) to walk through the order of the Mass and receive inspiration and insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord, Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it revolves around a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist.
Each section of the study guide provides a detailed commentary on Bishop Barron’s video lecture, followed by two sets of questions for individual preparation and then group discussion. The first set, “Questions for Understanding", is based on the video presentation, Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The second set, “Questions for Reflection", help you connect the material to your own life and experience.
After the Orientation (first session), each of the next six sessions includes time for video viewing (23-25 minutes) and small group discussion of the Study Guide questions (60 minutes). Participants read the commentary in the Study Guide and prepare the questions individually before the small group discussion. This preparation can be accomplished either before or after viewing the video, as the Commentary in each lesson is very detailed.
The Leader’s Kit provides everything you need to host the The Mass Study Program. We recommend that each parish or group purchase one Leader’s Kit to get started, and then a separate Leader’s Guide for each small group facilitator. In addition, each participant in the group needs their own Study Guide, which can be purchased in bulk with a volume discount before your program begins.
